I came across
this band, A Sound of Thunder, while listening to a recent Focus on Metal podcast. They played a
track from the band’s recently released CD and the host was really going on about the singer's voice.
After hearing lead
singer Nina Osegueda and the rest of the band with Josh Schwartz on guitar,
Chris Haren on drums and Jesse Keen on bass, I was hooked. I immediately went to and downloaded Out of the Darkness.

| Out of the Darkness |
Out of the Darkness has excellent musicianship and songwriting. Some songs remind me of a musical
mix of Judas Priest with some influence of Iron Maiden. This makes a great
combination and the result is great power metal in my opinion. The real treat
here is Nina’s vocals. It was a nice to hear her hit some great notes and not
growl like many of the women in metal today. It is a total drag when you see a cute girl as the lead singer, then she opens her mouth and sounds like the Cookie Monster!!!!!!!!
The title track, Out of the Darkness, is unique as it
features guest vocals by a blast from the past - John Gallagher of Raven. His vocal
style suits the song perfectly.
When I found out he was singing on the title track, I started
having flashbacks to when John Gallagher and Raven, did a metal duet with Udo
Dirkschneider on a re-recorded heavier, faster version of Steppenwolf’s - Born
to Be Wild. That is one awesome tune that still gets regular playtime on my iPod.
Like with my
other CD reviews, I will not do a track by track breakdown because you as the
reader will likely not agree with anything I write about each individual song
anyway. However, the 10 song track list has a great serving for any individual's musical taste.

Overall this band and this CD are a breath of fresh air for metal. It is a great power metal CD with touches of progressive elements to some of the songs.

I just bought this album on James' recommendation. I'll second his opinion; this is a solid release that deserves more attention. It makes me want to check out the previously released material.
